Staff augmentation and outsourcing are different purchases. Mixing them up is how a team ends up with a vendor status report when they needed an engineer in their stand-up, or an engineer in their stand-up when they needed a finished system.
The difference
| Staff augmentation (Calibre) | Outsourcing | |
|---|---|---|
| Who manages the work | Your team | The vendor |
| What you receive | An engineer on your tools and process | An outcome the vendor delivers |
| How level is shown | Certifications checked at the issuing body, on a verification record | Often a résumé and an interview the vendor runs |
| Price | A rate quoted from the engagement form for the seniority and model | Often a project price or an unpublished range |
Calibre is the first column. The procedure is Specify, Match, Record, Embed. The contrasts against traditional staffing — adjectives, unpublished rates, testimonials without fields — are on Calibre vs traditional staffing.
When augmentation is the wrong buy
If you want a turnkey outsourced project where an external vendor manages the roadmap, design, and personnel without your involvement, staff augmentation is the wrong model. Staff augmentation is designed for engineering leaders who maintain technical direction and require verified senior engineers embedded directly into their internal team and sprint cycles.
If you want a person, and you will manage them, specify the role. Every published roster role has a page under Roles. A Java developer for product services is the backend engineer. Market-data and order-management work is the trading systems engineer.
What stays checkable either way
Outsourcing firms vary. Calibre will put four things on paper:
- The certifications for the role, checked at the issuing body.
- The verification record, once engagement is underway.
- The rate for the seniority and the model, quoted from the engagement form.
- Quarterly re-audit after the engineer is placed.
A firm that cannot point to those four things is selling a different product, whether it calls the product augmentation or outsourcing.
FAQ
Is staff augmentation the same as outsourcing?
No. Augmentation puts an engineer inside your team. Outsourcing gives the outcome to the vendor’s team.
Which one is Calibre?
Staff augmentation. The engineer joins your process. The credential is checked before the match.
Where do rates sit?
On [Engagement](/calibre/engagement), as bands by seniority and model. The exact quote follows the role specification.
